In this group research project:
- Gain hands-on experience with biological data and AI tools
- Collaborate with peers and mentors in a research environment
- Develop a research paper and project demo suitable for science fairs or conference submissions
Course Plan (decide one of the following topics in the 1st class after discussion among students):
- Does AlphaFold Predict Disordered Proteins Worse Than Ordered Ones, And By How Much?
- Do Viruses That Infect Multiple Host Species Have More Disordered Proteins?
- Can an Algorithm Identify a Plant? Building a Simple Image-Based Leaf Classifier
- Reading Your Gut: Analyzing Public Microbiome Data to Compare Healthy vs. Unhealthy Diets
Weekly Milestones Include:
- Literature review and project setup
- Tool use (Python, ColabFold, CRISPR design tools, etc.)
- Visuals (phylogenetic trees, protein structures, ML models)
- Data collection and analysis
- Discussion of results and real-world implications
- Final research paper or demo presentation
